George Lee Gifford, 96, of Waltonville, Illinois passed away at 2:25 P.M. March 31, 2018 at Nature Trail Health Care Center in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born March 30, 1922 in Jonesboro, Illinois to Eugene Lee and Meda (Rhymer) Gifford. He married Dorothy Burgess on July 6, 1942 in Saint Louis, Missouri and she preceded him in death on July 28, 2010.

George is survived by his daughters, Catherine Lind of Waltonville, Illinois, Karen White and husband, Loyd of Sesser, Illinois, and Mary Sanders and husband, Dwayne of Mount Vernon, Illinois; son, Mark Eugene Gifford of Springfield, Illinois; fifteen grandchildren; thirty-seven great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; sister Juanita Dare and husband Alva; and brother-in-law, Kelly Pruitt of Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Gifford was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lester Eugene Gifford; two sisters, Ruth May Dellinger and Louise Pruitt; grandson, Todd J. Lind; granddaughter, Allyson Narlock; and stepfather, George Mathis.

Mr. Gifford served his country in the United States Army and worked as a meat cutter for Tri-City Grocers and later for Kroger.  He served as a Waltonville Village Board President and was honored with the Jefferson County Senior Saint award in 2013.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Woodlawn, was greatly loved, and will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Illinois. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Illinois with Reverend Tim Reynolds and Reverend Jason Webb officiating and granddaughter, Wendy Erhart offering the eulogy.  Interment will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville, Illinois.  Members of the Mount Vernon American Legion Post #141 will conduct Full Military Honors at the cemetery.
