Ethel M. Yearwood, 97, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 10:15 P.M. May 29, 2019 at her residence. She was born September 25, 1921 in Mountain Grove, Missourui to the late George Everett and Rosa (Birkner) Pilkington. She Married Walter A. Yearwood on February 1, 1941 in Jackson, Missouri and he preceded her in death, twenty years to the day before her, on May 29, 1999.

Ethel is survived by her son, Jerry Yearwood and wife, Chiquita of Mount Vernon; three nieces, Rhonda Barrell, Sheryl Grace Masterson, and Crystal Sussen; four nephews, Ronald York, Don Yearwood, David Yearwood, and Melvin Davidson; and one brother-in-law, J.D. Chapman.

In addition to her parents, George and Rosa Pilkington, and beloved husband of 58 years, Walter Yearwood, Mrs. Yearwood was preceded in death by her stepfather, J. Reuell Kelley; brothers, Carl E. Pilkington who was killed in the Vietnam Conflict in April of 1969 and Paul E. Pilkington; and sisters, Alice Grace and Carol Ann.

Ethel lived in Mount Vernon since the age of fifteen years.  Before that time she attended the early years of school in Hominy, Oklahoma and Colorado Springs, Colorado.  In her 9th grade of school in Colorado she was on the honor roll.  She attended Mount Vernon Township High School, graduating in 1939, and then worked for several years at the Mount Vernon Shoe Factory.  Later she worked more than twenty years in restaurants and drive-ins in the Mount Vernon area.  She was of the Baptist faith, having been baptized during her childhood while living in Oklahoma.  Mrs. Yearwood loved flowers, and will be remembered fondly as the “Flower Lady” for the care she took in planting and decorating her entire home with beautiful live flowers.  She was a dedicated, hardworking woman, who could sew by hand more precisely than any machine and who was known to spend hours on her hands and knees digging weeds out of the family field with a paring knife, perfecting it to golf course-like quality.  She put her heart and soul into every job she did and every relationship she tended.  She was loving and caring beyond measure, and had a big heart for people, touching the lives of every person with whom she came into contact. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be missed but never forgotten.

A Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. Friday, May 31, 2019 at Newell Funeral Home, 601 S. 42nd St. in Mount Vernon, Illinois. The Funeral Service will begin at 1:00 P.M.  with Reverend Tim Reynolds officiating.  Interment will follow the services at New Shiloh Cemetery in Jefferson County, Illinois. Memorials, in Mrs. Yearwood’s loving memory, may be made to the New Shiloh Cemetery.
