Gene Shirley, 90, of Mount Vernon, Illinois passed away at 10:28 A.M. September 24, 2019 at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor in Mount Vernon, Illinois. She was born February 14, 1929 in Jefferson County, Illinois to the late Ernie K. and Martha (Rapp) Fleener. She married Virgil J. Shirley on December 17, 1944 in Morganfield, Kentucky. They were blessed with nearly fifty-seven year of marriage before he preceded her in death on October 27, 2001.
Gene is survived by her son, Robert E. Shirley and wife, Rebekah in Texico, Illinois; daughters, Jeanne Ann Skinner of Ewing, Illinois, Angela Kay McDowell and husband, Guy Ricky (Rick) of Ewing, Illinois; grandchildren, Tony Skinner and wife, Candace of Roanoke, Texas, Michael McDowell and wife, Amanda of Linthicum, Maryland, Christopher McDowell and wife, Lexy of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jamie Brieseacher and husband, Ryne of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Erin Bevis and husband, Landon of Texico, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Nathan, and Zachary McDowell, Brianna Cochran, Jade and Ethan Skinner, Mikayla McDowell, Paisley Erin Brieseacher, Hank Bevis, Austyn Bevis, Waylon Brieseacher, and Staley Ann Brieseacher; brother-in-law, Dennis Shirley and wife, Helen of Mount Vernon, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Emma Gene was preceded in death by her sisters, Irene Fleener and Betty Tucker; and brother, Dalton Fleener.
Mrs. Shirley worked in the Logan Street Day Care Center, Foster Grandparent at Field Grade School, and tutored students. She was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church for many years and then became a member of Panther Fork Missionary Baptist Church. Gene was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
A Visitation will be held September 27, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend John Ashby officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Memorials may be made to the Panther Fork Missionary Baptist Church.
