John J. Hunt, 91, of Scheller, Illinois passed away at 9:31 P.M.December 27, 2017 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was born September 29, 1926 in Champaign County, Ohio to the late Vearl E. and Mary Elizabeth (Warman) Hunt. John first married Betty Ruth Ferguson on March 3, 1949 in Fletcher, Ohio. After her passing in 1984, he married Mildred Head in Goodletsville, Tennessee on March 14, 1986.

John is survived by his children, John Michael Hunt of Hillsboro, Missouri, Randy Jay Hunt and wife, Trinnie of Sparks, Nevada and Danny Antone Hunt and wife, DeAnna of Affton, Missouri; stepchildren, William Clarence Austin and wife, Geraldine of Troy, Missouri, Patrick Austin of Clearwater, Florida, Judy Austin of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Charles R. Austin and wife, Julie of Alvin, Texas, Terry Austin and wife, Michelle of Cedar Hill, Missouri, Vance Austin and Annita of Granite City, Illinois, Lynda K Earhart and husband, Gary of Ashland City, Tennessee, Linda Thien wife of Lance Austin, and Verla J .Myers of Scheller, Illinois; grandchildren, James E. Barfield, Timothy P. Barfield, Michael Barfield, Christopher Hunt, Parker J. Hunt, and Peyton C. Hunt; many great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Joanne Hunt of Columbus, Ohio and Wilma Schack of Hillsboro, MO; uncle and aunts, John Warman and wife, Bonnie, Jennie Wesbecher and husband, William and Joyce Weimer and husband, Kevin, all of Urbana, Ohio;  stepson-in-law, Ralph Bodimer; and many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchldren, friends, and neighbors.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Ruth (Ferguson) Hunt (1928-1984); children, Rebecca J. Hunt (1950-1952), Elizabeth Lucille Barfield (1951-2010), and William E. Hunt (1955-1966); stepchildren, Lance Austin (1958-2015) and Rita J. Bodimer (1952-2013); and brother, Herman E. Hunt (1937-2016).

John proudly served his country. He served in the United States Navy from January 5, 1944 - June 14, 1946, with service aboard the USS PC 583 in the Pacific Theater. He then served in the United States Air Force from March 18, 1948 until retirement on July 31, 1969, with service in Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Tinker AFB Oklahoma, Scott AFB Illinois, McClellan AFB California, The Pentagon, Elmendorf AFB Alaska, Offutt AFB Nebraska, Andersen AFB Guam, Offutt AFB Nebraska, Incirlik AB, Adana Turkey, and finally retired at the Pentagon. He later worked as a repair technician for Sears Electronics. John was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the American Legion, AF Sergeants Association, Patrol Craft Sailors Association, AACS Alumni Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and the Retired Enlisted Association.

A Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2018 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Illinois. A Funeral Service with Full Military Honors will be held Wednesday, January 3, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery Chapel, 2900 Sheridan Road in Saint Louis, Missouri.  Interment will follow. Memorials may be made to Saint Jude Children Research Hospital.
