John Henry Smith, Jr.

August 27, 1939 ~ March 27, 2018 (age 78)

John Henry Smith Jr. was born August 27, 1939 in Hughes, Arkansas to the union of the late John Henry and Vallie Mae Smith, Sr. John departed this life Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital at 5:41 P.M. John was married to the late Mattie B. Smith for 27 years.

John attended Hughes Public School in Hughes, Arkansas before moving with his family to Chicago, Illinois in 1959. John was employed at Imperial as a machinist for 30 years. After leaving Imperial, he worked at Edsal, from which he retired in 2001. John received Christ at an early age and was a member of Southtown Apostolic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was part the brotherhood and loved traveling with the church. John enjoyed playing checkers, shooting pool, and cooking.

John is survived by his son, Tyrese King Smith; his children by his formal wife, the late Amanda Smith, Johnny (Patricia) Smith, Frederick Smith, Gail (Andre Locke) Smith, all of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Jerry (Monica) Smith of Dallas, Texas, and Ruthie (Robert Woods) Smith of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren, Danielle (Daryl) Wallace, Tamika Smith, Amanda Smith, Robin Woods, and Portia Hall, all of Chicago, Illinois, Marcel Smith, Lorenzo Smith, and Frederick Smith, all of Mount Vernon, Anthony Smith of Chicago, Illinois, Tawana Robinson of Ann Harbor, Michigan, Fredericka Smith of Memphis, Tennessee, Steven Stallworth of Anderson, Indiana, Willie Love of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Tacari Smith of Dallas, Texas, and Loreal Leonard of Anderson, Indiana; brothers, David Smith and Willie Smith, both of Chicago, Illinois, and Kasey Smith of Little Rock, Arkansas; sisters, Shirley (Mitchell) Robinson, Claudia Smith, Pearlie Smith, Vallie T. Smith, and Carolyn (Danny) Harris, all of Chicago, IL, Bessie (Robert Hunt) Smith of Skokie, Illinois, and Sheila Smith, Gloria Smith, and Carol Lynn Smith , all of Little Rock, Arkansas; aunts, Fannie and Mattie; uncle, Elbert; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

John was preceded in death by his sisters, Annie Mae Smith and Helen Davis; and his grandson, Cantrell Elion.

John was very family oriented and instilled family values in all his children. He was the family Matriarch. He was loved by all and will be missed.

A visitation will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Southtown Apostolic Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 P.M. with Reverend James Gordon and Reverend Andrew Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Memorials may be made in John’s honor to the Smith family, in care of Gail Smith.
