Walter Lee Smith

November 22, 1945 ~ June 17, 2019 (age 73)

Lee passed away on 06/17/2019 at his home. His final days were spent surrounded by family.

Was born at his Grandma Gifford’s home in Arkansas where he spent his childhood making memories. His parents were Lawrence & Mildred White & Loy Smith, all deceased. On April 13, 1996 he married the love of his life, Carolyn. During their time together they enjoyed Florida trips, spending time at the beach, camping, sitting on their front porch and enjoying their family.

He is loving remembered by his beloved sons David Smith and wife Nicole Raynor of St. Louis, MO; Vincent Shehorn & wife Judy, Wesley R Shehorn Sr, deceased & wife Kim, London Soloman & wife Carol all of Mt. Vernon, IL and Shawn Crunk & wife Lee Ann of Dix, IL.

Lee’s grandchildren were his heart. He loved to share stories of the good ole days with them and they all trusted him with their “secrets” growing up. He never judged them, just listened with extreme interest and care. He was always good for a “little bit of money”   they would ask for. Those lucky grandchildren: Shannon and Brad Henry, George Shehorn, Crystal Karch, Amanda Baldridge, John Hughey, Chris “Butchie” Shehorn, Brandon Shehorn, Dustin Crunk & Makalia Isaacs, Nelson Crunk, Lindsey Deadmond, & Robert Fugate, Aaron Jordan & Jerry James, Dylan Jordan, London Soloman II & Bree Harbold. Wesley Shehorn, Jr, and Brandon Deadmond, both deceased.

Also special to his heart were the Great Grandchildren: Chris Shehorn & Rae Stewert, Sara & Alton Shehorn, Gauge and Zayden Morgan, Kaley Treffert, Drake Henry, Bentley & Evan Shehorn, Ryker & Brantley Crunk, Paetyn Crunk, Gus James, Myles & Madalynn Fugate, Arrianna Aleta Kelley. He was expecting a great great grandson Blake Wesley Shehorn in August.

He is survived by loving sisters: Diane & Ron Voss and Donna & Rick Fitzgerald and brother Larry White. Brother in law Joe & Jennie Littrell.

This man is known as Papa, Leehaw, and Walter Lee & Smitty. He was a husband who completed his mate. A father, grandpa & great grandpa, friend & very hard working man who will be missed. He loved his flag and his country. He served in this army in the Vietnam War as a mechanic in Germany.

He spent a great deal of his life as a logger. He was a little man who carried the big Jonsered Chainsaw all day. His frequent stories would include names like Knapp, Mahan, Kniffen, Borcherding, Chapman and more.

He worked for Field Township Road District, Mt. Vernon Township as supervisor of the Earnfare crew. He was a willing worker and loved his family without reserve. They brought meaning to his life. His wish was that all should be kind and love each other and continue to make memories.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Panther Fork Cemetery in Texico, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Panther Fork Cemetery.

Do not cry because he’s gone; smile and laugh because we knew him.
